Our sports legacy programmes encourage all Londoners to participate in sport

Sport

The Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire people to make life-long changes in their approach to physical activity and participation in sport.

The LDA hopes to keep the Olympic spirit alive long after the Games are over, helping Londoners stay fit and healthy and allowing the potential champions of the future to shine.

Summer of Sport

Summer of Sport offers free sporting activities for people of all ages. The overall aim of the programme is to increase the number of people regularly taking part in sports across London.

The Summer of Sport programme has been running successfully for the past two years and will continue up to the 2012 Games and beyond. Last year the programme was a huge success with over 500 events taking place across 29 sports, giving over 75,000 people the opportunity to take part in a range of sporting and physical activities across London.

As part of the programme, sports clubs, organisations and youth and community groups can apply for grants of up to £1,000 with funding available for all sports and physical activities, ranging from sports coaching sessions to sports festivals and sports club open days. A key focus of the 2008 programme is to provide quality coaching and participation opportunities in both the build up to, and legacy from, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Application for funding for 2008 has now closed.

Winter of Sport

The Winter of Sport initiative was launched in early 2008. The programme, which was funded with a £250,000 investment from the LDA, provides new sporting activities for young people across London.

Among its achievements, the programme:

  • established 56 new after-school sports clubs
  • provided new sporting and coaching activities for disabled people in 25 London boroughs
  • resulted in 3,000 new people participating in sport or receiving coaching

Application for funding for 2009 has now closed.

Official Sports London

Official Sports London is an exciting new bursary opportunity to help Londoners aged 16 and over complete sports officiating qualifications, volunteer or work as officials, and possibly officiate at the 2012 Games. There are 200 bursaries available through two strands which will provide financial assistance towards training courses, completing at least 15 hours of officiating experience and associated expenses.
