RISE Festival

Date: 13 July 2008

Time: 12.00pm - 8.30pm

Location: Finsbury Park

At the RISE Festival, which took place in Finsbury Park on Sunday 13 July, we asked people about the qualities they thought made successful neighbourhoods based on where they live and visited. A wide variety of examples from across London were highlighted, including:

  • Few chain shops, lots of originality, restaurants and social spaces that provide character to an area (examples included Camden Town, Portobello, Upper Street Islington, Stoke Newington and South Bank)

  • Activities for young people (e.g. Greenwich)

  • Accessibility by public transport

  • Events like RISE Festival because of how they promote diverse communities

  • Large open spaces (e.g. Brockley)

We also asked people what they thought was missing and there was a trend highlighting the lack of public spaces and activities for young people such as:

  • Games shop

  • After schools club

  • Play areas for kids

  • Kids gym

  • Theme Parks

  • More space for sport

  • Open spaces and parks to model the Legacy Park were varied from the more formal Royal Parks (Regents Park, Hyde Park) to the South London Common spaces such as Tooting Bec and Clapham Common
