Lee Valley Festival - Tottenham Festival and Carnival

Date: 21 June 2008

Time: 12.00pm - 6.00pm

Location: Bruce Castle Park

On Saturday 21 June we took our consultation roadshow to the Lee Valley Festival at Tottenham Festival and Carnival to ask people about their hopes for the Olympic Park after the Games.

Even though it was a damp day, nearly 280 people took part and let us know their thoughts and big ideas. Public involvement was through our bike displays, which provided visitors the opportunity to add their comments to the interactive panels, as well as the Olympic Park masterplanning game. We also had a children’s area with model-making and a face painter on hand to reward the hard working model makers.

We took our Olympic Park masterplanning game to get people thinking about how they thought the Park should be laid out and had lots of interesting comments:

  • “I have learned that you need to have a good mixture of housing, public spaces etc. in an area.”

  • “I found it very interesting and it gives a good insight into how hard planning can be.”

  • “You cannot have everything in the Park! Incorporate Art in the Park – sculptures etc. We have the sports bit so look at other arts and culture additions. Also use the river imaginatively – cycle ways, towpaths, picnic areas etc.”

  • “The masterplanning game was a very useful way to get people to think about what will happen to the area after the Games. I would hope to see the space utilised with affordable housing, play areas, green spaces and activities for young people.”

  • “This was very mind capturing and really will help everyone. I enjoyed this unique event.”

We also wanted to know if people had any big ideas for the Park and here are a selection:

  • “The best Olympic legacy would be to change the clocks (daylight savings) to give us more light in the evenings to enjoy the facilities we already have (parks, outdoor sports, gardens, allotments etc.)”

  • “A water park with a slide and an outdoor swimming pool.”

Tottenham locals also told us how the Olympic Legacy could benefit East London:

  • “Places/activities for children and young people, affordable family activities indoor and outdoor, shared housing of the same design for both people who can afford it and those who can’t, and local business to be involved in the processes.”

  • “A swimming pool, a lake with boats in it, a bowling alley, archery, a cycle track for children, and a place for learner drivers to practice before going on the road.”
